The legacy of Wendell Berry's Citizenship Papers, and citizenship and community in rural America.
Mary Berry is the Executive Director of The Berry Center. She grew up at Lanes Landing Farm in Henry County, Kentucky, attended public schools in Henry County and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1981, and spent her adult life farming. In 2011 Mary established The Berry Center, in New Castle, Kentucky, to serve as a repository for the study of small farm agriculture and to preserve and share the legacy of the work of her grandfather, the late John M. Berry, Sr., her uncle, the late Kentucky State Senator John M. Berry, Jr. and her father, author Wendell Berry.
Mary serves on the Board of United Citizen's Bank in Henry County, Kentucky. She is on the board of the Kentucky Historical Society, and serves on the PACE Board for the state of Kentucky. She is married to Trimble County Kentucky farmer, Steve Smith, who started the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model in the state of Kentucky. She speaks all over the country in support of the work at the Center: putting Wendell Berry's writing to work and restoring a culture that will support good farming.
